Wireless N Adapter

A guide for learning about how to find cheap wireless routers and other types of routers

A wireless adapter is a card or a USB drive that you put into a computer or laptop that allows it to connect to a wireless network. The wireless N adapter allows computing devices to connect to a wireless LAN. This allows for mobile users to take advantage of WiFi networks and hotspots while also allowing home users to connect multiple computers to one network wirelessly.

The wireless N adapter comes in a variety of forms such as PCI, PCMCIA and USB. The PCI card is installed on the motherboard of a desktop computer with a PCI bus. Laptop or notebook computers have a narrow open bay on the side where you can insert a PC Card or PCMCIA. USB wireless adapters plug into the computer or laptop USB ports. Which one you get is dependent upon your computer and your preferences. If it is going into your desktop computer and is permanent, the PCI bus card is probably the best option. However, if your computer doesn’t have a PCI bus slot, the USB adapter would be just the thing.

Installing the wireless N adapter is fairly simple. Most come with a disc or CD Rom that walks you through the process. The device itself doesn’t require a power cord or anything as it draws power from the host computer. It comes as a USB drive or a card that you plug into your motherboard or laptop. You’ll first run the setup CD and allow the wizard to get you through all of the steps and then, when prompted, you’ll attach the wireless N adapter to the computer. Once, connected and the install completes, you’ll be ready to search for available networks and get connected.

A wireless N adapter can transfer data at 54Mbps up to 600Mbps, dependent upon the adapter, while wireless g adapters can only transfer up to 54Mbps. Keep in mind though, that the only way a wireless N adapter will be faster, is if it is connected to a wireless N router. Devices that are not 802.11n compliant will prevent the wireless N adapter from operating at its maximum potential. Wireless N greatly increases speed, coverage, and reliability of your wireless network by sending and receiving data using MIMO (multiple input multiple output) technology.

There are a wide range of options for your wireless N adapter just like most other devices. Conveniently, they are being made smaller and faster to keep up with current technology. Wireless adapters are fairly inexpensive and can be found at almost any consumer electronics store. Even local department stores carry them in the electronics department.

Some wireless adapters come with a built in firewall for added security. Be sure to shop around for the features you want and you’re sure to find an affordable option. Keep in mind that your wireless N adapter will work best with wireless N routers and other wireless N devices. While they claim to be backward compatible, the maximum capacity cannot be fully experienced without having wireless N only devices on the network.
