Best Wireless Routers

A guide for learning about how to find cheap wireless routers and other types of routers

There are many different wireless routers out there. It is sometimes difficult for the average customer to find the best wireless routers. Knowing which router is fastest and which is most stable is often cumbersome for a user to find out. Different technicians have their own personal preferences for determining the best wireless routers. The two most important determining factors for the quality of a router are the speed and stability.

Linksys routers are in the top level of the best wireless routers. Linksys routers tend to be more user-friendly to set up and maintain and typically have the best performance. The router configuration interface is always consistent and very easy to follow. Linksys doesn’t hide the security and configuration options in advanced menus as they are clearly arranged on tabbed pages. Linksys also provides quick and easy access to troubleshooting documentation and user guides. Linksys routers are known to have a very fast throughput and rarely have problems with frequent disconnects. Therefore, the performance and stability of Linksys routers rates among the top choices for best wireless routers.

Netgear routers are also considered one of the best wireless routers. This is another real popular brand. Netgear has an excellent installation wizard with their router and is also fairly easy to install. The ports on the router are color coded which makes it less confusing for the non technical folks. The Netgear routers don’t typically have a lot of problems with getting disconnected. However, when there is a power outage or something that causes a disruption to the network, the router does need to be reset and the computer rebooted which can be cumbersome for those that aren’t familiar with troubleshooting network connections and resetting routers. Netgear offers decent speed and stability and could be considered one of the top 5 best wireless routers.

Belkin routers are also recommended as one of the best wireless routers. Belkin routers are very similar in functionality to Netgear routers. Belkin was the first brand to market MIMO (multiple input multiple output) technology which guaranteed increased range and greater throughput. Compared to Netgear and D-Link, Belkin routers seem to perform better distance wise. However, Belkin’s G Router doesn’t handle streaming music and video very well according to a lot of users and may be a strong determining factor in the purchase of a Belkin router. Belkin seems to be a good basic router but doesn’t compare performance wise to Linksys.

D-Link routers also claim to be one of the best wireless routers. D-Link is one of the most inexpensive of the wireless routers and when it comes to performance, it shows. On a D-Link wireless network, there are frequent disconnects. The router does do a good job of automatically reconnecting to the network but a wireless router needs to have a stable network connection. Changing ISP’s (internet service providers) often results in needing to upgrade the firmware and reconfigure the router which is also cumbersome and usually requires a call to tech support. Linksys or Netgear are certainly better options performance wise if you’re willing to spend that extra dollar for performance.
